Frequently Asked Questions about Electronic Cigarettes

Black Mesa Vapors is committed to helping new and existing vapers answer questions they may have regarding electronic cigarettes. Below I try my best to answer many of them.

What is an electronic cigarette?
An electronic cigarette, or e-cigarette, is an electrical device that simulates the act of tobacco smoking by producing an inhaled vapor bearing the physical sensation, appearance, and often the flavor (with or without nicotine content) of inhaled tobacco smoke, without its odor. The device uses heat to vaporize a propylene glycol or glycerin-based liquid solution into an aerosol mist, similar to the way a nebulizer or humidifier vaporizes solutions for inhalation.

Are electronic cigarettes safe?
There has been media coverage about the safety of electronic cigarettes, which may be confusing and a bit scary. Electronic cigarettes are intended to be a less‐toxic alternative to smoking tobacco cigarettes, but not as a treatment for nicotine addiction.

Can electronic cigarettes help me quit smoking?
There is a lot of anecdotal evidence and even some scientific research surveys that strongly indicate that e-cigarettes are an effective alternative to smoking. Surveys show that up to 80% of e-cigarette users quit smoking traditional cigarettes while using e-cigarettes.

However, while some users have gradually reduced the nicotine levels down to zero, the majority of e-cigarette users treat the devices as an alternate source of nicotine and not as a nicotine cessation program. So there is not as much scientific evidence yet that show how effective e-cigarettes are when used to treat or cure nicotine addiction. Yet, anecdotal reports by users who have used e-cigarettes as a way to wean from nicotine also indicates they seem to be very effective way to break smoking triggers and dramatically reduce nicotine levels. As with pharmaceutical NRTs, it depends upon the smoker and the strength of his or her addiction and resolve to quit. E-cigarettes also appear to be a much safer option for short-term use in the event of relapse.

The good news is nicotine by itself has very low health risks, so switching to e-cigarettes can be nearly as good as quitting altogether. The most important thing for those who cannot or will not quit nicotine to do is to stop the exposure to the harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke and e-cigarettes can help them do it.

What is the “smoke” that is released?
The simulated "smoke” is simply the vaporized contents of the nicotine cartridge. This smoke is water vapor that evaporates into the air within seconds and leaves virtually no odor. There are no additional / unwanted chemicals produced in the vaporization process because there is no chemical reaction or combustion taking place as with regular cigarettes.

What ingredients are in Black Mesa Juice?
Black Mesa Juice ingredients:

Water
Liquid nicotine
Flavoring
Propylene glycol
Vegetable glycerin

Liquid Nicotine
Black Mesa Juice is available in different nicotine strengths as well as nicotine-free.

Flavoring
The Black Mesa Juice solution is available in a wide variety of flavors. The taste is very subjective, so it is a good idea to try many flavor in order to find  the ones you most enjoy. Sample packs are a great way to get started on your taste-testing adventure.

Many e-cig users begin with tobacco flavored juice, but quickly find that others flavors are better. Vaping is a method of smoking enjoyment, but it is different from smoking cigarettes. Some of the most surprising flavors turn out to be more enjoyable that tobacco flavored juices.

Non tobacco flavors include just about every flavor you can think of, including: fruit (blueberry, watermelon), beverages (blue cola, doc peppah, beer, rootbeer), and desserts (chocolate, cream, caramel, double mint).

Propylene Glycol and Vegetable Glycerin
Propylene Glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerin (VG) are added to the Black Mesa Juice to produce smoke-like vapor. The Black Mesa Juice contains a mix of the two. Both are common food additives approved by the FDA.

What is propylene glycol?
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has determined propylene glycol to be "generally recognized as safe” for use in food, cosmetics, and medicines. It is used in food coloring, and flavoring, as an additive to keep food, medicines and cosmetics moist, and in machines that simulate smoke, although usage in simulating smoking devices is not currently included in the list of uses generally recognized as safe by the FDA. Propylene glycol is used in electronic smoking devices to make the water vapor appear more like smoke and to keep the cartridges from drying out and losing flavor.

Does nicotine cause cancer?
No. It is widely believed that nicotine does not cause cancer by the medical community. Nicotine research is on-going and the medical research has found some advantages and disadvantages of nicotine consumption. Determine through your own research if nicotine alone is a net gain or loss for your health.

Do electronic cigarettes taste the same as regular cigarettes?
Electronic cigarettes cartridges and Black Mesa Juice are offered in tobacco and menthol flavors that taste similar to light cigarettes and cigars but are smoother and less harsh.  Electronic cigarette cartridges and Black Mesa Juice are also offered in a wide variety of other flavors that you may like better than tobacco and menthol flavors.

How many puffs on an electronic cigarette equals a tobacco cigarette?
Currently there have not been any tests to determine the number of puffs on an electronic cigarette compared to that of a tobacco cigarette. The quantity of nicotine in vapor has yet to be determined. We do know that vaper's blood test results have shown about the same levels as smoker's blood test results. The end result is that nicotine consumption will vary by individual.

How long does a 10ml bottle of Black Mesa Juice last?A 10ml bottle of Black Mesa Juice typically lasts a 1-2 pack/day smoker about 1 week.

How long do the batteries typically last before needing a recharge?
Electronic cigarette batteries will last 1 – 3 days before re-charging, depending upon the style of battery (pen-style, mini, cigar etc.) and intensity of usage. Longevity will vary by individual as well.

How many times can a battery be recharged?
This varies by style (pen-style, mini, cigar etc.). On average a battery can be recharged over 300 times.

How do you fill the DCT Tank?

DCT Tank Assembly includes:

1 - Plastic Drip Tip
_________________________________________________________________________________
Note: Although the pictures do not show it, filling a DCT tank is easier if you keep the cartomizer attached to the battery. Tilting the DCT tube also helps the filling process.

1. Obtain DCT tank assembly and a bottle of Black Mesa Juice.

2. Remove the drip tip from the cartomizer.

3. Fill the by dripping 15-20 drops of Black Mesa Juice around the edges into the fabric filler. Be careful not to get Black Mesa Juice into the center hole.

4. Slide the cartomizer partially out of the DCT tank.

5. Drip Black Mesa Juice into the DCT tank around the cartomizer. As it fills, slide the cartomizer up to prevent
liquid from going into the cartomizer. You can fill as close to the top as you would like without allowing the
liquid to leak into the cartomizer.

6. Slide the cartomizer back into the top hole of the tank and align the bottom (threaded end) with the slot on the end of the DCT tank so it is fully inserted into bottom of the DCT tank.

7. Replace the drip tip. You will need to apply pressure to the bottom of the cartomizer while pushing the drip tip on to prevent the internal cartomizer from sliding out of the tube tank.

8. Screw onto your battery device and you are ready to use the DCT tank assembly.

Are You Ready To Vape?

Perhaps you have seen someone smoking an electronic cigarette or maybe you’ve heard advertisements influencing you to purchase one. You have probably wondered if e-cigs are the “real deal” or just another gimmick. Let me tell you now, it’s no gimmick! Millions of people just like you have already made the switch from buying traditional tobacco cigarettes to this new and improved method of “smoking”.

The biggest and most obvious difference is the structure of an e-cig. Traditional cigarettes are filled with many nasty chemicals like tar, lead, ammonia, cyanide, formaldehyde, and carbon monoxide. E-cigs, on the other hand, consist of a cartridge (mouthpiece), an atomizer or cartomizer (heating element), and a simple battery. The cartridge holds the eliquid which gives the e-cig its flavor. The atomizer or cartomizer heats the liquid into a vapor. The battery is simply what powers the unit. There is not any actual smoke, but only vapor which dissipates much quicker than lingering smelly smoke from regular tobacco cigarettes.

Next you must consider the health aspects of e-cigs compared to that of a tobacco cigarette. You might have heard by now that smoking traditional tobacco cigarettes may cause cancer, hence their name “cancer sticks”. Your lungs are exposed to all the aforementioned chemicals and so are the people around you. With electronic cigarettes, you will not be polluting your lungs or the people around you. The eliquid consists of a natural base liquid (whose ingredients have been approved by the FDA), flavoring, and a small amount of nicotine. With e-cigs, you actually get to choose the flavor, the amount of nicotine, and the base liquid (usually VG or PG or a mix thereof). You are in total control of your vaping experience.

Many new vapers begin using tobacco or menthol flavors, but quickly move on to sweeter flavor offerings like blueberry, watermelon, rootbeer, and even chocolate. BlackMesaVapors.com offers many different flavors and nicotine levels to choose for your complete e-cig experience. You can even reduce your nicotine level so you can wean your body away from it altogether.

So what about the price to switch from traditional tobacco cigarettes to electronic cigarettes? This newer and better method of “smoking” has to be expensive, right? NO! Actually, it’s much cheaper!  In fact, a pack per day smoker can usually save around $2,000 per year. BlackMesaVapors.com has an e-cig calculator where you can enter your own figures into the simple calculator to find out what your savings will be if you indeed were to make the switch.

And please don’t be intimidated by all the jargon of the e-cig world. Words like “cartomizer” or “dual coil tanks” are harmless. Keep it simple. Just purchase an electronic starter kit and grab a bottle or two of Eliquid to begin vaping. BlackMesaVapors.com makes it easy for new users to begin their own vaping journey by providing consumers with information regarding electronic cigarettes, instructions with all starter kits, an easy-to-use website, and customer service that is unbeatable. ...truth is freedom

Many consumers have raised concerns regarding whether or not electronic cigarettes are a healthy alternative to smoking traditional tobacco cigarettes.  The Federal Drug Administration did a study on two brands of e-cigarettes in May 2009 and announced that a couple carcinogens were found in the cartridges and that nicotine levels were not exact as stated on their respective labels.  They issued a press release in July 2009 to warn the public.  In September 2009, the FDA classified and announced that electronic cigarettes as drug delivery devices and are subject to regulation under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The classification was challenged in court and overruled by the Federal District Court citing “the devices should be regulated as tobacco products rather than drug or medical devices.” In March 2010, a US Court of Appeal stayed the injunction pending an appeal.  On December 7, 2010, the appeals court ruled against the FDA in a 3-0 unanimous decision. The judges rules that such devices would only be subject to drug legislation if they are marketed for therapeutic use.  Electronic cigarette manufactures had successfully proven that their products were targeted at smokers and not at those seeking to quit. The District of Columbia Court declined to review the decision on January 24, 2011.

Many claim the FDA wants regulation so they can have more of the market for stop smoking aids, such as, nicotine patches and nicotine gum. However, no proof of such claims has come to the forefront.  In April 2010, The American Association of Public Health Physicians (AAPHP) stated that they support electronic cigarettes sales to adults, "because the possibility exists to save the lives of four million of the eight million current adult American smokers who will otherwise die of a tobacco-related illness over the next twenty years."

Another study of electronic cigarettes was administered by the Boston University School of Public Health in 2010.  The study performed by researchers concluded that electronic cigarettes were safer than real cigarettes and may aid in breaking the habit of smoking. Researchers said that while further studies on electronic cigarettes were needed, "few, if any, chemicals at levels detected in electronic cigarettes raise serious health concerns." Electronic cigarettes were found to be "much safer" than traditional tobacco ones, and had a level of toxicity similar to existing nicotine replacements. In their report, the level of carcinogens in electronic cigarettes was found to be up to 1,000 times lower than regular cigarettes. It also said early evidence shows that electronic cigarettes may help people to stop smoking by simulating a tobacco cigarette.

Many current e-cigarette users have reported advantages of making the switch from traditional tobacco cigarettes to electronic cigarettes:

  • No smoke including secondhand smoke like traditional cigarettes. E-cigarettes only produce a harmless  vapor consisting of 99% water, 1% nicotine and other trace elements which have been deemed nonharmful by the FDA.
  • No ashes or mess like traditional cigarettes
  • Less harmful carcinogens than the 4,000+ carcinogens found in traditional cigarettes
  • Can smoke them almost anywhere even hospitals.
  • No yellow stained teeth or hands like traditional cigarettes
  • Far less expensive than traditional cigarettes.  Many claim to save a couple thousand dollars annually.

So are electronic cigarettes really "safer" than traditional tobacco cigarettes? The bottom line is that consumers should make educated decisions by doing some of their own research. Many of today’s products are reviewed by a multitude of consumers from all walks of life. Before you make a purchase, check out reviews and testimonials of other consumers. The truth behind electronic cigarettes is that they are helping many people quit smoking or at the very least cut down their smoking habits. Do your own research by reading some of the many articles on the subject and talk to people who are currently vaping electronic cigarettes.  Your conclusion will be your truth and truth is freedom.

CELEBRITY VAPERS

Electronic cigarettes are taking the world by storm since new laws were enacted to ban smoking indoors and in many public places. Technically, even though electronic cigarettes contain nicotine, they do not produce real smoke and are legal to “vape” indoors. It’s no wonder why many of today’s hottest celebrities are making the switch from traditional tobacco cigarettes to electronic cigarettes. It’s fantastic that so many are choosing e-cigarettes that do not contain the drawbacks of stinky, unhealthy and harmful traditional tobacco cigarettes.

Check out some of the hottest celebrities that are now smoking electronic cigarettes:

KATHERIN HEIGL

Katherin Heigl smokes electronic cigarettes proudly.  She recently starred on the Tonight Show with David Letterman showing off her newest e-cig.  “You feel like you’re smoking, but blowing out water vapor so you’re not harming anyone around you and you’re not harming yourself.” A gorgeous actress like Katherin doesn’t want yellow stained teeth, bad skin, or wrinkles.  Electronic cigarettes do not deprive the skin of oxygen that causes premature aging.

LEONARDO DICAPRIO

Known for his bad boy looks and attitude, he began smoking them when he attended an award ceremony in Britain that handed them out as celebrity favors. He was spotted smoking an e-cig while riding his bike. While smoking a traditional tobacco cigarette isn't usually a great idea while cycling, smoking electronic cigarettes doesn’t fill your lungs with tar.

JOHNNY DEPP

The electronic cigarette made its big debut on the big screen in the film The Tourist showing Johnny Depp smoking an e-cig in front of a no smoking sign. He is very familiar with smoking addiction since his mother and sister have been chain smoking for years until they began using the electronic cigarette. Johnny Depp was spotted vaping on a train, which is one of the benefits of an e-cigarette – you can smoke them almost anywhere.

LINDSAY LOHAN

Celeb bad girl Lindsay Lohan decided to make the switch to e-cigs ever since her father sent her a package of electronic cigarettes in hopes that she would kick her smoking habit. The starlet is now trying to straighten up her life by using electronic cigarettes instead of nasty tobacco cigarettes.

CHARLIE SHEEN

Bad boy actor Charlie Sheen has been spotted smoking electronic cigarettes since 2011.  Once threatened with a $100,000 fine for smoking on stage in Toronto, Canada, he turned to e-cigs for aid. Although he has made many controversial decisions in his life, he has made a wise decision by turning to e-cigarettes.

BRITNEY SPEARS

Due to the flak she was given for smoking traditional tobacco cigarettes in front of her kids, Britney made the switch to electronic cigarettes, which contain no secondhand smoke.  She and her fiancĂ© Jason Trawick now choose to vape instead of using unhealthy tobacco cigarettes.

PARIS HILTON

Paris Hilton could be seen in many paparazzi photos smoking tobacco based cigarettes in the past.  Her father Richard Hilton disapproved of her consumption of smoking countless traditional cigarettes. These days however, she is an avid vaper.  She has been seen smoking electronic cigarettes in LA nightclubs since the ban of indoor smoking.

KATHERINE ZETA JONES

Katherine Zeta Jones is one of the latest celebrities to attempt to quit smoking by electronic cigarettes.  Her husband, Michael Douglas, recently won his battle with throat cancer.  She has decided to start using electronic cigarettes instead of traditional cigarettes.

Many other celebs have been seen vaping electronic cigarettes including Danny Bonaduce, Jose Canseco, Jennifer Farley (J-Woww), Dennis Quaid, Tom Petty, Kate Middleton,  DJ Qualls (Kyle Edwards), Kevin Federline, Nikki Reed, Lydia Bright, Taryn Manning, Ronnie Wood, Natasha Lyonne, Jennifer Coolidge, Trace Cyrus, Kevin Connoly, Eric Roberts, and Dappy.

Smoking a cigarette may have looked cool in the 20th century, but in today’s new health conscious and greener, energy efficient world, it’s not surprising that vaping is the new smoking.
