Vaping Tips

So you’re thinking about making the switch from smoking to vaping! The world of vaping is vast and can be intimidating for those just starting out. We want to help you make your transition as smooth as possible. Listed below are some useful vaping tips for new vapers:

Don’t expect vaping to be like smoking. Vaping is a GREAT alternative to smoking, but it is different. Cigarette smoke is light, whereas, e-cig vapor is heavier. Instead of a quick draw that you may be used to from a regular tobacco cigarette, you should take a long, slow draw from an electronic cigarette. Take the time to enjoy the flavor of the inhale and exhale.

Buy only from reputable vape shops. Excellent vape shops will take the time to show you all aspects of your new e-cig. They should explain how to turn it off and on, how to replace your atomizer coils, and how to maintenance your e-cig. If you have questions about vaping or your new device, do not be afraid to ask.

Buy an extra set of batteries. If your batteries run out of charge, you don’t want to be tempted to pick up a cigarette.

Store batteries properly. You should always keep your e-cig batteries in a case. NEVER put exposed batteries in your pocket. They will connect with your change and other metal objects and will heat up in a hurry!

Always be respectful of others nearby. Do not blow vapor in the direction of others. Comply with your local laws and regulations regarding e-cigarette use.

Soak your atomizer coils. When changing your atomizer coils, avoid horrible tasting, harsh dry hits by soaking your coils properly. For best practice, we recommend you cut a 10ml bottle in half, pour eliquid into the bottle, drop in your coil and let it soak for a few hours. Pick up the atomizer coil and gently blow out the excess eliquid into a paper towel. Your atomizer coil is now ready!

Clean your e-cigarette thoroughly. Use a dry cloth or paper towel to wipe your e-cig clean. Use q-tips to gently clean your spring-loaded pins (this is where your screw your tank into your e-cig).

Purchase the correct VG/PG ratio eliquid for your tank. Standard tanks (not sub ohm) work well with a higher ratio of PG (Propylene Glycol) while sub ohm tanks work best with a higher ratio of VG (Vegetable Glycerin). High PG eliquid provides a more intense throat hit and slightly less flavor. It should be used with atomizer coils above 1 ohm. High VG eliquid provides a more subtle throat hit, great flavor, and more clouds. It is noticeably thicker than PG eliquid. Those that might have an allergy or be sensitive to PG liquid, should use VG liquid. The market trend currently is going more towards sub ohm tanks and high VG eliquid.

Purchase the correct nicotine level for your eliquid. High nicotine levels (18 to 24 mg) are generally for smaller e-cig devices that use standard tanks (not sub ohm). Whereas, low nicotine levels (0 to 6 mg) are generally for sub ohm tanks. Sub ohm tanks use more eliquid because they vaporize the eliquid quicker and the user gets more vapor. The most popular nicotine level for sub ohm tanks is currently 3 mg.

New vapers may cough for a few days. It’s nothing to worry about. Your body is recovering from being a smoker. Simply put, the cilia (hairs) are falling off with the tar that your body is rejecting. They will grow back, but until they do your throat and lungs will be sensitive. Drink water to help.

This 1300mAh battery will give you the diversity of vaping at different voltages and at 1300 mAh you get extended life of the battery between charges. This has a redesigned circuit board from previous Twist style batteries making them more reliable. The Winder has five markings to indicate approximate output voltages at 3.2, 3.6, 4.0, 4.4, and 4.8 volts but is adjustable throughout the entire voltage range. Just give it a spin to your desired output and you are ready to go. The Winder will work with a variety of 510 or eGo cartomizers, atomizers, clearomizers or tanks. You can charge the Winder with an eGo charger like our eGo USB charger.

The Aerotank V2 is a dual bottom coil clearomizer with a Pyrex tank and adjustable airflow. It holds about 2.5mL of eliquid. This tank has 510 and eGo threading. The adjustable airflow ring is easy to turn and adjust to your preference. To fill the tank, remove it from your battery and turn it upside down. Unscrew the base, and fill the tank with liquid to the top of the center post. Replace the bottom cap, flip it rightside-up, wait about 30 seconds, and it's ready to vape! Replacing the coil is just as simple as other bottom-coil tanks; remove the base, unscrew the coil from the base, and replace it with a fresh one. Dual coils provide a smooth, bold flavor without too much heat, and reduced burnt taste. The Kanger Aerotank V2 is the perfect clearomizer for any setup!

Here's a fantastic new wide-bore drip tip from EHPro! The Carburetor allows you to adjust your airflow by simply turning the ring on the side. The bottom is made of delrin to insulate the top of the drip tip from the heat generated by your coils. If your atomizer just isn't providing enough airflow, this drip tip can make up for it!

Here's another great new drip tip from EHPro. This wide drip tip looks particularly good with pipe mods, but will work with most 510/808/901 atomizers. The width and length of this drip tip increases airflow and reduces juice backup.

Electronic Cigarette Battery Charging and Safety

Electronic cigarettes are becoming more popular every day. Many vapers use rechargeable batteries as opposed to disposable batteries because they are more cost efficient.

Correctly charging your e-cig battery is vital to the vapor performance and extension of battery life. Your vaping experience will be pleasant for a long time if you properly maintain your e-cig batteries.

Black Mesa Vapors offers three options to charge your e-cig battery – USB, wall, or car. Many eGo e-cig starter kits contain at least the USB charger. Be sure to check the contents of the starter kit for the charger(s) before buying.

USB charger
All eGo batteries need a USB charger. This is the device that connects to your battery and other charging adapters. The USB charger can be a standalone charger where it easily plugs into your USB port on your desktop PC, laptop, and other USB power sources. Always check the voltage requirements of any power source to ensure proper output. Some devices, such as, laptops generate more power than is required which will overheat the battery and may cause the battery to explode.

To begin charging, plug your USB charger into a standard USB port and simply screw in the battery to the threaded end of the USB charger. The indicator light will turn red while the battery is charging and will turn green when the battery is fully charged.

Wall charger
The wall charger is a 2-pronged device that is designed to work with your standard 110v electrical outlets. A USB charger connects to the wall charger. To begin charging, connect the USB charger and the wall charger. Next, plug the wall adapter into a standard 110v electrical outlet. Then, carefully screw your battery on the USB charger. Do not over tighten the battery.

Car charger
The car charger is designed to plug into your car’s A/C cigarette light outlet. To begin charging, insert the car charger into the A/C outlet. Next, connect the USB charger and the car charger. Then, carefully screw your battery to the USB charger. The indicator light should turn red to signify charging has started.

Charging frequency
Some vapers charge their battery twice a day while some only once per week. How often you will need to charge your e-cig battery depends upon the size of your battery and the frequency that you vape. When you charge your battery for the initial use, it is a good idea to leave them connected for 1-2 hours after the indicator light turns green. Always charge your battery to full capacity to ensure maximum lifespan.

Most vapers carry at least one spare battery so they can continue vaping while waiting on their other battery to fully charge. Nothing is worse when you need your e-cig and the battery is depleted! We advise vapers to get all three charging options so they can rest assure they will never be without battery power.

Battery Life
Most of today’s electronic cigarettes contain lithium-ion (LiMN) batteries. While lithium ion batteries last much longer than many other types of batteries, they still wear out and require replace replacement. Batteries can add up unwanted costs if you have to buy them often.

When there is a significant reduction in vapor even when your e-cig battery is fully charged and you are using a new atomizer, battery replacement is deemed necessary. A typical lithium-ion battery can give you approximately 200-400 charges. Exercising proper battery maintenance and care can extend the life of your battery and ensure maximum performance.

Lithium-ion batteries are designed for frequent use. The more they are used, the easier the power flows through the battery cells. Using your e-cig daily or every few days aids in the performance of the battery. Just like your mobile phones and iPods that run on lithium-ion batteries, e-cig batteries perform better when they are being used regularly.

Battery Handling
Have you ever dropped your regular cigarette? No big deal, right? With e-cigs you cannot afford to be careless. Dropping your electronic cigarette can damage the device. It is recommended that you use an eGo lanyard or G-case to reduce the risk of dropping your e-cig.

You should also never place your e-cig in your pocket as the tank can be damaged and you will end up with a pocket full of e-juice. And do not expose your e-cig battery to direct sunlight as heat and water as these can dramatically reduce its lifespan. Some e-cig batteries like the 18350 or 18650 style look very similar to your standard AA batteries. Carrying these types of batteries in your pocket can be hazardous. Loose coins or your car keys may come in contact with your battery causing the battery to overheat. We recommend users to purchase a plastic battery case to transport these types of batteries.

It is best to organize your electronic cigarette and accessories in an eGo carry case or G-case to protect your batteries from dust and impact when you are on the move. Even a slight drop can cause e-liquid to leak into your battery or trigger a short circuit.

Battery Drainage
You should not let your lithium-ions drain below 20 percent. Waiting for your battery to go empty before charging can most certainly reduce its lifespan. After multiple uses, you will be able to get a good idea on how long your battery charge will last. We recommend that you do not wait for the battery LED button to start blinking. Instead, we suggest you begin recharging when your battery is approximately halfway through its full charge.

If you hate waiting for your battery to fully charge, always keep a rotation of batteries in your kit. Black Mesa Vapors’ standard e-cig kits contain at least two batteries to make it easy for users to switch between them during charging times.

As long as the atomizer is connected to the battery, it continuously drains power even when you are not using your e-cig. If you are not going to use your e-cig for an extended period of time, you should remove the atomizer from the battery before putting them in storage. This will extend the interval between recharges and ultimately increase battery life.

Battery Storage
If you plan to store your electronic cigarette for an extended period, you should charge them to at least 75 percent beforehand. Storing batteries with low or empty power will cause them to drain a lot faster. When lithium-ions are drained, they have to work harder to replenish power. This is the reason why manufacturers ship their electronic cigarette batteries at least 75 percent charged.

Battery Charging
When charging your e-cig battery for the first time, you should leave it on the charger for an extra hour or two after a full charge. However, do not do this for succeeding charge cycles. The indicator light on your USB charger will turn green once your battery is fully charged. When you see this light turn green, please remove the battery right away from the charger. This will prevent overcharging your battery. Although it seems convenient to leave your e-cig charging overnight, we strongly advise against it.

Battery Maintenance
You should always keep your battery contact clean. When you open your starter kit for the first time, you will notice that the battery terminals are pristine gold and it is easy to draw on the mouthpiece. But after several uses, dust and moisture will begin to accumulate on the threads and holes. The buildup of gunk can cause damage to the battery over time and plugged air holes can make it difficult to take a normal drag. If you do not clean your batteries regularly, it could eventually cause them to malfunction.

To clean your battery, get a cotton swab or alcohol pad and wipe down the contact point. Use a toothpick to clear the air holes.

Battery Disposal and Recycling
In the United States, the federal government has classified lithium ion batteries as non-hazardous. They are safe for disposal. However, these batteries may still contain iron, cobalt, copper, and nickel. Although these metals are considerably safe to be discarded in landfills and incinerators, a better way to dispose of used batteries would be to recycle them.

Battery Safety
There have been a few cases of electronic cigarettes exploding and causing small fires, leading to the industry to issue a warning on the dangers of charging electronic cigarettes.

Here are some of the safety tips you should follow in order to prevent accidents:

  • Only use the charger supplied with the e-cig kit
  • Do not mix and match components from different e-cig brands
  • Do not screw the battery to the charger too tightly (plug the charger into the power source first, then gently screw the battery in until the LED light glow red)
  • Do not leave your e-cig battery unattended when charging
  • Clean the battery pin and charger contact at least once a week with tissue or alcohol wipes
  • Remove the battery right away from the charger when fully charged

Rebuildables: The Latest Evolution of E-Cigs

Electronic cigarettes have taken the world by storm and are predicted to take over traditional tobacco cigarettes (analogs) within the next decade. Vapers are growing by the thousands and the electronic cigarette market is currently mass producing a variety of new designs daily. E-cigs have quickly evolved and are leaving many consumers puzzled over which design is best suited for them. The latest style of e-cigs to catch the eyes of many vapers are rebuildables. However, let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. Instead, let’s start at the beginning.

Many new vapers have chosen an eGo style e-cig, which is typically the cheapest and smallest among e-cigs, but is very capable of getting the user to put down analogs. For the majority of e-cig consumers, the eGo style remains their device of choice and is currently still the king of the market. Examples of eGo style e-Cigs include eGo-T, eGo-C, and eGo passthrough batteries.

Some users tend to want more from their e-cig so they have turned to mods or APVs (Advanced Personal Vaporizers). Mods are bigger and better e-cigs that can crank out more volts or watts, thus producing more vapor. Many mods have bright LCD screens which allow the user to adjust their voltage or wattage along with a variety of other options. Some of the best mods include the SID and Zmax.

There are also mechanical mods which do not have LCD screens. They are as their name implies, simply mechanical. Some vapers either use one 18650 battery or stack two smaller 18350 batteries for even better vapor production. Examples of mechanical mods are the Maraxus and the QQ mod.

And finally the latest evolution in e-cigs are the rebuildables. Rebuildables consist of Rebuildable Dripping Atomizers (RDAs), Rebuildable Atomizers (RBAs), and a hybrid. All rebuildables are for advanced vapers who have taken their vaping to the next level. They are hobbyists of the vaping world who stop at nothing to achieve the biggest clouds of vapor. They have even coined this massive vapor production as "chasing clouds”.

The RDA consists of dripping Eliquid directly on an exposed wick where it is then vaporized into massive vapor clouds. Vapers rebuild the wicks out of silica, ekowool, and cotton to name a few materials. Of the rebuildables, the wicks of an RDA are usually the easiest to rebuild, but are typically the most difficult to maintain because the user must frequently apply or drip more Eliquid. Some of the more common RDAs include the Nimbus and Trident.

RBAs are similar to the RDA, but contain a tank and conductive coils in addition to wicks. The longevity of these rebuilt wicks make the RBA the easiest to maintain. Their wicks are made from steel mesh, porcelain, and surgical cable. A huge advantage of the RBA is the increased flavor gained over a standard cartomizer or clearomizer tank that is typically found on the eGo style e-cig.

The last type of rebuildable consists of a dripping atomizer and a hybrid tank. They usually consists of several parts including a tank and a drip-style wick that constantly remains soaked in Eliquid as opposed to that of an RDA which dries out every few inhales. Some of the most popular hybrid rebuidable atomizers include the Kayfun and Ithaka.

We recommend our readers do more research on the advanced world of rebuildables. You should watch many instructional YouTube videos to fully understand how ohms, volts, and watts work before attempting to rebuild any atomizer. Exercise extreme caution when rebuilding atomizers or you may face the risk of overloading batteries which can cause them to explode. You should also purchase a good quality voltmeter before you jump into this hobby of rebuilding atomizers. Until next time, happy vaping!

DCT Cartomizer Troubleshooting

Although DCT tanks are my personal favorite tank system, there is sometimes a small learning curve for new vapers associated with its use. Below I discuss a few troubleshooting tips to help you become more familiar with your DCT tank system. Upon purchasing your new DCT Starter Kit, you should have received instructions labeled DCT Tank Filling Instructions. You should follow these instructions precisely when filling your new DCT cartomizer tank.

Issue: Burnt taste.

Cause(s): The cartomizer was not filled/primed correctly or the DCT tank was vaped on empty resulting in the filler material in the cartomizer around the heating element  to become burnt.

Fix: Sometimes, depending on how burnt the cartomizer has become, you can prime more Eliquid into the cartomizer to resolve this issue.  Other times, the cartomizer is too burnt and should simply be replaced. Note: Remove white rubber cartomizer cap before using the new cartomizer. This cap is only used when storing the cartomizer.
___

Issue: Gurgling sound when I draw on my DCT tank in which sometimes Eliquid comes though the mouth piece or Eliquid leaks onto my battery. The cartomizer is flooded which simply means the cartomizer has too much Eliquid in the filler material.

Cause(s): A flooded cartomizer can be the result of over priming your cartomizer, drawing too hard on the DCT tank, dripping Eliquid down the center hole around the heating element of the cartomizer, or the Eliquid has become too thin due to prolonged exposure to sunlight or overheating of the Eliquid (usually occurs in variable voltage MODS when used at higher voltages).

Fix: To fix a flooded cartomizer, you should remove the DCT tank from the battery. Place the threaded end of the DCT tank (bottom of the cartomizer) into a paper towel. Blow through the drip tip a few times to remove the excess Eliquid from the cartomizer. Then wipe the threads clean and dry. Now screw the DCT tank to the battery. Press the LED activation button a couple times for about two seconds. This will burn off excess Eliquid in the cartomizer. At this point, you should be able to refill your DCT tank with Eliquid and begin vaping. Note: You should not repeat the priming step in your original DCT Tank Filling Instructions. Cartomizers typically only need primed upon initial use.

If your Eliquid has become too thin due to overheating, you should set the e-cig in a cool place for a few minutes. If using a MOD, you should decrease the voltage to prevent overheating of the Eliquid.
___

Issue: I hear a popping sound when I press the LED activation button on my battery.

Cause(s): After your e-cig has been sitting awhile, the Eliquid is cool and has totally saturated the filler material around the heating element . When the LED activation button is pressed, the heating element heats up very quickly and vaporizes the cool Eliquid causing popping sounds. As you continue to vape, the Eliquid around the coils is warm and does not pop as often.

Fix: This is normal. No fix is necessary.
___

Issue: When using a MOD, like the ZMax, SID, or Lavatube, my Eliquid tastes burnt.

Cause(s): Incorrect cartomizer used or the voltage/wattage setting on your MOD may be set too high.

Fix: First, be sure you are using the correct cartomizer. Black Mesa Vapors offers a few different resistances in cartomizers: 1.5 ohm (standard), 2.0 ohm, 2.5 ohm, and 3.0 ohm.

*Recommended Resistance (DCT):
Standard eGo battery (3.7v)----1.5 ohms
Variable Voltage Mods (5.0v)----2.0 ohms
Variable Voltage Mods (6.0v)----2.5 ohms
Variable Voltage Mods (7.0v)----3.0 ohms

Second, make sure the current voltage/wattage setting is set up properly. You may need to decrease the voltage (v) or wattage (w) on your MOD.
